Words like “maybe” and “almost” are the main culprits here. Your readers come to your blog to learn from what you’re posting. To linger on such uncertainties as “maybe” and “almost” defeats that purpose. When doing blog optimization, opt for a more secure, educated approach to information, so as to not forsake your authoritative position.

For example: instead of saying “Maybe phones will become obsolete one day,” you can say, “The rise of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality is paving the path to reducing – if not eliminating entirely – the need for handheld devices.”

The last sentence conveys information to the reader in a way that does not compromise the authority of the writer.

Avoid Sounding too Certain

Conversely, words that express absoluteness, like “always” and “never”, are to be avoided as well. These words are overtly forceful and, more often than not, exceptions exist for such an absolute statement. Leaning on such words suggests insecurity; arousing suspicion in your audience and undermining you as an authoritative figure just as much as timid, uncertain words do.

Steer Clear of Buzzwords

Nothing makes bloggers sound more like a mouth-breather than the obnoxious usage of the word “literally,” or the blunt overuse of the word “amazing,” or even just using “just” too much. Such words are unwieldy and unbefitting of an informative blog. Plus they make you come off as ignorant to most readers with a decent eye for writing. Hence, they’re a prime target for blog optimization.

The most obvious example here is the word “amazing.” Amazement is no simple emotion but has lost its luster due to the inappropriate use of “amazing” in everyday conversation. Think of a superhero being asked to do menial tasks and being reduced to a superpowered community serviceman.

Seeing as the word already has a blunted edge in today’s language, using it in a context that doesn’t call for it would elicit frowns from more meticulous readers. To clip one’s toenails would hardly be “amazing” and neither would a massage chair or a gelato from the new ice cream place around the corner. In describing these not-so-superlative experiences, make sure to use the appropriate adjectives, such as satisfying, relaxing, and palatable, respectively.

The misuse of “literally”, on the other hand, is far more annoying than the misuse of “amazing.” It provides unnecessary emphasis on words that are very clearly “literally” meant, in place of such words as “really” or “actually.”

This word has frequently been misused by the hands of the younger population and using it in the same manner as they would make your reader think of you as someone juvenile, and your information, unreliable.

The word “just” isn’t technically a buzzword, but it adds unnecessary fluff to an otherwise compact and well-written sentence. Often added with the intent to make a significant sound less complicated, it instead damages the blogger’s authority by sounding too informal and suspicious.

For example, take the sentence: “Eliminate the word ‘just’ from your sentences, and you’ll get a tight piece of prose without sacrificing any meaning whatsoever.” Sounds crisp and concise, doesn’t it? Now add the word “just” at the beginning. See the difference?

Those are the three most important things to look out for when doing blog optimization. So long as you keep them in check, you do not need to worry about your readers clicking away from your blog in droves because of a flop post.
